Business Owners, how you can overcome the challenge of balance.

This week, I focus on wellbeing.

Many small business owners and executive leaders have a constant challenge with creating a balance between work and life, for themselves and their families. Ultimately this behaviour can roll out to their employees and affect productivity and efficiency of the business.

So, what do we mean by well-being? It is the experience of health, happiness, and prosperity. It includes having good mental health, high life satisfaction, a sense of meaning or purpose, and ability to manage stress. More generally, well-being is just feeling well in yourself and all around you.

It all starts with you. What can you do to create a better balance in your life?

In these coming days and weeks, we all need to be a little stronger in ourselves, our minds, our being. Potentially you may find you have some extra times on your hands.

Take some time to assess and understand your own wellbeing, and address areas you feel could benefit your life, using the Wheel of Life below.

Professional / Personal Wheel Of Life

The purpose of this wheel is to help you identify key areas of your personal or professional life, assess how these are currently working out for you, and then to break down areas of improvement. So why not give it a go!

  • Write on this page.

  • For each priority on the centre of this wheel, write a personal or professional priority for you. (some examples below)

  • Score your sense of satisfaction on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 = very satisfied), write that score in the priority field.

  • Once you have scored all sections of the wheel, identify 3 areas and consider whether they are areas that you would like to target for improvement. Ask yourself the question “my current score in x, what would a 10 look like?”

  • Work from the centre of the wheel to the outside; identify your final goal first, write this down on the Final Goal box.

  • Then break that down to your first journey goal, a mid point goal. This gives you something more sizeable to achieve.

  • Next identify barriers that may stop you achieving your goal to raise your awareness and prepare to overcome them.

  • And finally write down the actions you will take to achieve your goals.

Don’t forget; in each box on the outside of the wheel, highlight your strengths. Building on your strengths can really help you achieving your goal.

Don’t forget; Keep these visible, pin them up on your desk, fridge, wherever is great for you to stay focused and make the change.
